Top 7 of ’07: Best Finale #6 – Veronica Mars

Monday, December 24th, 2007

Veronica Mars (Kristen Bell)
of Neptune, California is one of the most kickass female protagonists
among kickass female protagonists. Although the series ended
prematurely after only three seasons on the air, Veronica Mars ended
with a vengeance in the episode entitled “The Bitch is Back.”

Though the quality of the series languished somewhat in the third
season, the series finale brought back elements from the brilliant
first season that made us die-hard fans swoon over what could have
been, if only the show was renewed for a fourth season. After a sex
tape starring Veronica and Piz (Chris Lowell)
was leaked to the Internet, Veronica went on a hunt to find and stick
it to the culprits, reminiscent of the first season when she tracked
down who raped her at Shelly Pomroy’s party. Other shoutouts to the
first season were bringing Jake Kane (Kyle Secor) back as a member of
the super-secret society known as the Castle that Veronica ultimately
bests. Veronica even finds herself face-to-face with an oversized oil
painting of her dead best friend Lilly Kane, whose death provided the
season-long arc during the show’s freshman season.

The series finale brought a dark, ambiguously unethical atmosphere back to Veronica Mars, after a lighter, cheerier third season. Veronica broke the law to get revenge on the Castle, and her father Keith (Enrico Colantoni) broke the law to protect her. We even got to see Logan (Jason Dohring)
embracing his self-destructive ways again, beating the crap out of the
guy who posted Veronica’s sex tape on the Internet. The episode ends on
an open-ended note, with Veronica simply walking down the street in the
rain, after voting for her father for sheriff. Does Keith become
sheriff, or did tampering with evidence cost him the election? Does
Veronica eventually work for the FBI? These questions can only be
answered in our imaginations now.

Top 7 of ’07: Best Shows – Veronica Mars

Monday, December 24th, 2007

Debbie Chang ranked Veronica Mars 3rd.? She says…

Veronica Mars is smarter than me. It’s true. She is. And that is why I must place Veronica Mars near the top of my list of best shows of 2007.

The year 2007 brought us the second of the third-season mini-mystery arcs on Veronica Mars,
this one involving the murder of Dean Cyrus O’Dell (guest star Ed
Begley, Jr.). Though not as meticulous or satisfying as the amazing
22-episode long mystery of who killed Lilly Kane (Amanda Seyfried) in
the first season, Dean O’Dell was still a sympathetic enough character
to make the mystery of his death compelling.

And while Veronica Mars
took a turn towards the bubble gum in its final season, shedding much
of the dark, ethically ambiguous noir landscape of seasons past, it
still had the quintessential snarkiness and one-liners that I so love.

The series ended with a bang with the last standalone three episodes.
Veronica passes her exam to be an official private
investigatoralthough she didn’t quite beat her dad Keith’s (Enrico Colantoni) scoreand found herself at odds with her current boyfriend Stosh “Piz” Piznarski (Chris Lowell)
because of her inability to commit to him completely. She distracts him
from their relationship drama with a cheerleader-themed session of
hanky-panky, which unfortunately gets leaked onto the Internet. Now
things are personal, and Veronica Mars is always at her best when
things are person. Reminiscent of “A Trip to the Dentist” in the first
season, in which she discovers who raped her at Shelly Pomroy’s party
before the start of the series, Veronica investigates the Hearst
College campus with a vengeance, eventually finding and sticking it to
the culprits.

Although it was a disappointment to all when Veronica Mars
wasn’t renewed for a fourth season, it went out on a perfect, dark note
in the series finale, “The Bitch is Back.” The finale brought the show
back to its noir roots, with the two Mars protagonists perpetrating
shady acts and once again becoming Neptune, California’s least favorite
duo.
