Kristen Bell: “Its Hard For Women to Be Funny”

Saturday, August 8th, 2009

Kristen Bell loves being funny — but admits it’s “hard” for women to have a sense of humor without being the butt of the joke.

The Heroes actress loves to have a laugh but she finds her comic roles much more challenging than the serious ones.

“I think it’s one of the hardest things, to be a woman and be funny and not be completely and utterly self-deprecating. And for a long time, people have been at odds with accepting that,” she says.

Bell, 29, voices a character in the upcoming movie Astro Boy — a role which she recently revealed has taken her back to her childhood.

“I didn’t know Astro Boy at all before working on this movie, but now I’m immersed and have all the little toys and stuff,” she dished. “I just love the characters. They are so cute.

“The toys are great to play with — even if I am maybe a little too old. I guess I’m just a big kid!”

Ladies of Comic Con Reveal Their Favourite Festival Moments

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

It’s official: Ladies love getting their geek on at Comic-Con.

Even though it’s been perceived in the past as a “fanboys only” festival, some of Hollywood’s hottest actresses are embracing it as their own as they meet their most passionate audience. Some even want to sneak around in costume!

New Moon star Kristen Stewart – this year’s “Con Queen” – had several thousand devoted Twilighters flocking to San Diego to catch a sneak peak of her film’s footage and see her and her costars.

“This is definitely a high,” said Stewart. “It’s a little overwhelming to have so many people here, but I guess that’s a good thing. Just judging from past experiences – when I show up at these sort of places, I’m sort of blown away and in this case I was ready for it.”

Ready or not, the fanaticism can be contagious. “Certainly there is a major geek within me, actually, just kind of right on the surface,” laughed Scarlett Johansson, who wore exotic Christian Louboutin heels she called her “super-hero booties” while promoting Iron Man 2. “I have never experienced anything like this before, two weeks after filming has wrapped. It’s exciting to be a part of something that kind of has this built-in fan base that’s got this electricity around it.”

Cameron Diaz meanwhile got to mix and mingle with the crowd while promoting her horror film The Box. “My favorite part so far has been the signing of all the posters for the fans that came through,” Diaz told PEOPLE. “Everyone is so kind and so generous. It’s nice to be around people who are really positive and excited about the filmmaking process.”

Kristen Bell – a Comic-Con favorite thanks to her geek-chic roles in Heroes and the film Fanboys – agrees! “There are so many cool people here,” she said. “I mean, Johnny Depp was here, the whole cast of Twilight, who are like The Beatles. You can’t even think when they come in the room!”

Adds Bell, “I think the actual sort of pop culture Los Angeles is starting to catch on about how important Comic-Con is and how these are the opinionated audience members. “They’ll say their opinions no matter what they are.”

“When these fans find something they love they really stick with it through and through,” Ghost Whisperer star Jennifer Love Hewitt told PEOPLE. “They remember more about the show than we do. They’re like ‘Do you remember that one episode where you brushed your teeth and it was with Colgate and the green toothbrush and your hair was up?’ And you’re like, ‘Um, no, but thank you!’ They’re very passionate and I love that.”

Costume Party
First timer Audrina Patridge says she loves the fans who don constumes. “I first heard about Comic-Con from watching Entourage a couple of years ago but I’ve never been,” Patridge said of her trip to San Diego to tell fans about her latest acting gig in Sorority Row. “I mean, there are so many comic fans and people dressing up on the street!”

“I just love that there are so many people in costumes,” agreed Zombieland’s Emma Stone. “I haven’t been on the floor yet. I’ve just seen them walking around. I haven’t gotten to see the true diehards yet. I can’t wait to see all the homemade costumes.”

Some of the ladies are even considering joining the fans in costume and checking out the scene incognito. Patridge wants to go undercover as Star Wars’ Princess Leia, while Bell would love to be Chewbacca – even though she may be a bit height-challenged to become a Wookiee. “Maybe I could just have a hole in the bellybutton that I could see out of,” she laughed. “I could make it work.”

“I would be Wonder Woman!” exclaimed Hewitt, while Stone mulled over an equally sexy alter ego: “Jessica Rabbit? Would that be crazy? I think that would be a little too crazy for the Comic-Con floor.”

But maybe the costume isn’t the key. A year ago self-proclaimed nerd Megan Fox wandered through the convention center without any disguise, simply wearing jeans and a Star Wars T-shirt and went “totally” unrecognized. Could she pull it off again? “If I was dressed like that and I kept my head down, sure, because I’m so short, people don’t notice,” Fox told PEOPLE.

Kristen Bell Still Wants to Appear on Gossip Girl

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

Kristen Bell has provided the voice of Gossip Girl since the beginning of the CW teen drama, and so far, she’s been doing a fabulous job meddling in the lives of our favorite Upper East Siders. In the future, however, the 29-year-old actress wants to step in front of the cameras —even just for a brief cameo.

“I want to make a cameo and shoot it right down the middle,” Bell said slyly with a wink and a smile Tuesday night as she was leaving Cosmopolitan magazine’s annual Fun Fearless Female dinner at the W Hotel in Los Angeles.

This isn’t the first time Bell has expressed her desire to appear on Gossip Girl. Evidently, she has been bugging executive producer Josh Schwartz to let her do a brief appearance since the beginning of the year.

“I’ve pitched [to] Josh Schwartz a couple of times for me to be on camera as a waitress or something but he wasn’t buying it. But hopefully he’ll change his mind in the future!” she said back in April.

Unfortunately, there has been no word on Schwartz’s response toward her request so it seems that Kristen Bell’s appearance is just gossip for now.

Prior to providing the voice of the seemingly omniscient Gossip Girl character, Bell became a household name for playing the titular character in the cult hit TV series Veronica Mars. She was then cast as Elle Bishop on NBC’s Heroes and appeared in films such as Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Serious Moonlight, and Fanboys.

Kristen Bell can next be seen starring in the romantic comedy When in Rome, in which she plays a young and successful real estate agent named Beth Harper who appears to be unlucky in love. But when she travels to Rome to visit her newlywed sister, she impulsively steals some coins from a reputed fountain of love, and is then aggressively pursued by a band of wannabe lovers. When in Rome, which also stars Josh Duhamel, will hit theaters on January 29, 2010.

Kristen Bell Talks Astro Boy

Friday, July 3rd, 2009

She played the hottie that got tagged by the nerd in Fan Boys to the somewhat bad ass villain in Heroes. Kristen Bell has already made her mark in comic geek utopia with out truly being in a ComicBookMovie. Until now.

Kristen Bell
will lend her voice in “
Astro Boy“, which will be a 3-D movie from Imagi Studios. Bell voices a human roll opposite the film’s title roll of our robot hero, but she says even though she doesn’t have the lead, her character can stand on there own two feet.

“I play Cora, who is a girl who befriends Astro when he comes down from Metro City onto the surface of Earth,” Bell told Sci Fi Wire. “She runs a little kind of like Peter Pan group of kids. She’s pretty tough, pretty sassy.”

This is Kristen’s first time outing with an “
Astro Boy
” material, but don’t worry she has had plenty of time to get acquainted with the
Astro Boy
source material.

“I didn’t know ‘Astro Boy’ at all, but now I’m immersed and have all the little toys and stuff,” she states.

Kristen Bell
, being reported, as some fans wanting to see her in a Batman film has gotten the chance of being able to watch a pretty big chunk of “

Astro Boy
” already. Off course she has nothing but good things to say about it.

“It looks amazing,” Bell states. “To be involved in the process is really exciting, because you see the layers that they put on, and you see when they don’t have the 3-D involved and then when they do, and you see when it’s just penciled out. It was a really interesting process.”

Bell also enjoyed the voice recording process as well.

“Sometimes when another character comes in and records and they like something they have done, you have to match it or be at a comparable state of mind in the scene, because you don’t record with other people.” “Overall, it was a really easy, fun process.”
